UN peacekeeper killed in mortar attack near Marjayoun, UNIFIL reports

UNIFIL opens investigation after deadly mortar strike near Marjayoun, warns attack may constitute a war crime

A United Nations peacekeeper died Wednesday after mortar shells struck his position near Marjayoun in southeastern Lebanon, according to UNIFIL.

The shells hit late Tuesday night. The critically injured peacekeeper was flown to a hospital in Beirut, where he died from his wounds early Wednesday morning, the statement said. Two other peacekeepers injured in the same attack are being treated at a medical facility on the UNIFIL base.

UNIFIL said it has opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the incident and called on relevant national authorities to investigate, identify those responsible, and ensure criminal accountability.

The force said it has detected an increasing number of projectile trajectories and impacts in South Lebanon.

“The violence must end,” UNIFIL said.

The UN force reiterated that deliberate attacks on peacekeepers constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law and of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and may amount to war crimes.

The statement did not identify the nationality of the peacekeeper killed or the others injured. The investigation is ongoing.
