At least six people died and several others were injured when a five-story student accommodation building collapsed Sunday in southwest Delhi, India Today reported.
Rescue teams were searching the rubble in Satya Niketan, near Delhi University’s South Campus. Witnesses estimated that 30 to 40 people could be trapped, but authorities had not confirmed that figure.
Police said construction work was underway in the basement when the building collapsed around 1:30 p.m. South Campus police station received a call about the collapse at 1:34 p.m.
“The exact number of persons trapped/injured is still not known at present,” police said.
Firefighters, police and national and local disaster teams continued rescue operations. At least 12 fire tenders were deployed, while residents helped search for survivors.
Delhi Police identified the building’s owner as Hariram Bansal, a Gurugram resident. Police filed a first information report against him and formed teams to locate him. The supplied material did not specify the allegations contained in the FIR.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and said authorities were assisting those affected. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the AIIMS Trauma Centre and said strict action would be taken.
