Trump Says New U.S.-Iran Talks Could Resume as Soon as Friday

Pakistan pushed for more time for diplomacy as Tehran stopped short of confirming any return to negotiations.

President Donald Trump told the New York Post on Wednesday that the U.S. and Iran might be able to talk again as early as Friday, but there is no set date yet.

When asked whether talks could begin within 36 to 72 hours, the president told the post that it was “possible” that negotiations could start in 36 to 72 hours. The post cited Pakistani sources, indicating that the timeframe reflected Islamabad’s ongoing diplomatic contact. Iranian authorities had not publicly confirmed a new meeting.

Trump said he would agree to Pakistan’s request to extend the ceasefire and give diplomacy more time, according to Reuters. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said he hoped both sides would stick to the cease-fire and move on to a second round of talks in Islamabad. But Reuters said it wasn’t clear when or if that meeting would take place.

Trump also said that the ceasefire would stay in place while Iranian leaders and representatives worked on a single response, according to Reuters. The report said it wasn’t clear if Tehran had agreed to extend the cease-fire. There was no immediate confirmation from Iran’s top leadership.

Axios says that U.S. officials and mediators were waiting for Iran to give a clear response before the next round of talks.

Iran’s state-run TV broadcaster IRIB said that Tehran had not officially responded to Trump’s claim that the truce had been extended. IRIB said on X that reports saying Iran had agreed were “inaccurate” and said no statement had been issued by Iranian officials.

Iran publicly disagreed with Trump’s claim that there was a ceasefire. The speaker of Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, wrote on X that a “complete ceasefire” would only sense it wasn’t broken by what he called a “maritime blockade” and fighting continued on other fronts. He also said that it was “impossible” to reopen the Strait of Hormuz under what he called a clear breach of the ceasefire.
