President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he had ordered the U.S. military to extend its ceasefire with Iran after what he described as a request from Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the blockade would remain in place and U.S. forces would stay ready while Iranian leaders and representatives work to produce what he called a unified proposal.
Trump said the Iranian government was “seriously fractured” and that the pause would last until the proposal was sent and the talks were done. He didn’t say how long the extension would last or provide any information about the proposal he wants.
Pakistan called a two-week ceasefire on April 8, and it has now been extended. At the time, Reuters said that both the US and Iran had agreed to the pause. But the next day, fighting was still going on, and things were still unclear.
On April 17, CBS News reported that Trump said Iran had “agreed to everything,” even getting rid of enriched uranium. He also stated that Tehran had consented to cease funding Hamas and Hezbollah.
By April 19, Trump was threatening to use military force again. After the shooting of ships near the Strait of Hormuz, TIME reported that he accused Iran of “totally violating” the ceasefire. He also said he would blow up Iran’s bridges and power plants.
By Tuesday morning, Trump was hinting that the cease-fire might end soon. He told media outlets that he would rather not extend the ceasefire and that the US would start attacking again if an agreement wasn’t reached soon. In a press release from the White House, he said, “I expect to be bombing because I think that’s a better attitude to go in with — but we’re ready to go.”
Trump said he would keep the ceasefire going hours later.
In his post on Tuesday, he said that the blockade would stay in place, U.S. troops would stay ready, and the pause would last until Iranian leaders and representatives come up with a single plan and the talks are over.
