Oman operator says terminal running normally after reports of explosion, alleged drone attack

Operator’s denial contradicts industry sources as supertankers anchor offshore and details remain unresolved

Petroleum Development Oman said Friday operations at Mina Al Fahal were normal, hours after sources reported an explosion near its mooring berths had halted crude loading at the terminal.

Three sources told Reuters the blast occurred between single-buoy mooring berths 1 and 2 and was caused by an alleged drone attack. It was not immediately clear when the incident took place, and no party has claimed responsibility.

Several supertankers were seen anchored off the port Friday, according to shipping data from LSEG. The terminal exports 800,000 to 900,000 barrels of crude per day, Reuters reported.

On Wednesday, Iranian state media reported that Tehran had targeted a U.S. military ship hosting a “control and command centre” as it approached Iranian territorial waters in the Gulf of Oman. U.S. Central Command denied that claim.

The cause of Friday’s explosion has not been officially confirmed.
