President Donald Trump said Saturday that Iran violated a cease-fire by firing at ships in the Strait of Hormuz and said U.S. representatives are heading to Islamabad, Pakistan, for talks.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed Iranian forces opened fire in the waterway, including at what he described as a French ship and a British freighter.
Trump said U.S. representatives would arrive in Islamabad on Sunday evening for negotiations. He did not identify the officials involved in his Truth Social post. Separately, according to the New York Post, Trump told the outlet that Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would be in Islamabad on Tuesday for what he described as a second round of Iran peace talks.
He also claimed Iran had moved to close the Strait of Hormuz and said the disruption was costing Tehran $500 million a day. Trump further said the United States was not being hurt by the closure because ships were heading to Texas, Louisiana, and Alaska to load supplies.
Trump said Washington was offering Iran a “very fair and reasonable” deal. He warned that if Tehran refused, the United States would target Iran’s power plants and bridges.
