U.S. Soldier Wounded in Saudi Base Attack Dies While Supporting Operation Epic Fury

Sgt. Benjamin N. Pennington was wounded in the March 1 attack at Prince Sultan Air Base and died days later, officials said.

Sgt. Benjamin N. Pennington, a 26-year-old soldier from Glendale, Kentucky, died March 8 from wounds he suffered after an attack on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia while supporting Operation Epic Fury, the Department of War said. He was assigned to the 1st Space Battalion, 1st Space Brigade at Fort Carson, Colorado. The incident is under investigation.

The Department of War said Pennington was wounded in the March 1 attack on the base. A separate release from the U.S. Army said he was seriously injured during what it described as the Iranian regime’s initial attacks across the Middle East.

Lt. Gen. Sean A. Gainey, the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command leader, said that the death is “saddening” and that Sgt. Benjamin N. Pennington is a “hero who made the ultimate sacrifice.” Col. Michael F. Dyer, the leader of the 1st Space Brigade, said that the fallen soldier was “a dedicated and seasoned non-commissioned officer who led with strength, professionalism, and a sense of duty.”

According to the U.S. Army, Sgt. Benjamin N. Pennington joined the Army in 2017 as a unit supply specialist and the 1st Space Battalion on June 10, 2025. He has received three Army Commendation Medals, the Army Achievement Medal, two Army Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, and many more awards and medals.
