Officials: Bihar Floods Affect More Than 4.14 Million People

Flooding has affected more than 4.14 million people across 14 districts in Bihar, eastern India, officials told local media, according to a Xinhua report Thursday.

Several rivers were flowing above the danger mark at multiple locations. Authorities attributed the flooding to incessant rain across parts of the state during the past five days.

Officials told local media that hundreds of community kitchens and more than a dozen relief camps had been established for people affected by the floods. The makeshift camps were also providing medical care.

Disaster response personnel were using hundreds of boats to evacuate and transport people trapped by floodwaters, according to the report.

All India Radio, India’s state-run broadcaster, reported Thursday that conditions had improved slightly as water levels in several rivers receded.

The broadcaster also reported damage to hundreds of houses. Nearly 700 rural roads remained under water, disrupting road connections in affected areas.
