Musk Calls for AI Rivals to Review Each Other’s Models Before Release

Elon Musk called for artificial-intelligence companies to give competitors early access to their models before public release, in an interview with The Economist at his Texas Gigafactory.

He recommended informal weekly or biweekly calls between rival developers, plus a week or two of early access for competitors ahead of a release.

Competing companies are “likely to understand if something is a security risk” and would not be shy about saying a rival’s model should be delayed, he said.

Musk compared the arrangement to the Motion Picture Association, the industry group behind film ratings, and said that system seems to have worked well. Governments, in his view, need to step in only when a company does something very dangerous and refuses to reduce the risk.

He named no company that has agreed to the arrangement, and the published material carries no response from other AI developers.

Musk spoke to Zanny Minton Beddoes, the magazine’s editor-in-chief, in his first extended interview since SpaceX’s initial public offering. The conversation also covered the timeline for AI overtaking human intelligence, China’s rapid progress, his interest in Europe and his view that he got too involved in politics.
