A ballistic missile fired toward Prince Sultan Air Base fell in an uninhabited area on Saturday, Saudi Arabia’s Defense Ministry said, as the kingdom continued to respond to incoming missiles and drones during the expanding Gulf security crisis.
Saudi Press Agency (SPA) quoted Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki as saying the missile did not hit a populated area. Earlier in the day, he said Saudi defenses intercepted two drones, one in Rub’ al-Khali and another east of Riyadh.
In a broader announcement released by the Saudi Defense Ministry, the kingdom said its forces also intercepted drones headed towards the Shaybah oilfield in the southeast of the country, as well as ballistic missiles headed towards the Prince Sultan Air Base in Al-Kharj, 80 kilometers southeast of the capital, Riyadh.
The latest announcement follows a series of interceptions reported a day earlier. Saudi officials said Friday that forces destroyed ballistic missiles aimed at the same air base, along with cruise missiles and drones targeting areas in and around Riyadh and Al-Kharj.
These developments come as Iranian-related military activities escalate in the region, prompting Gulf states to bolster their air defense capabilities in and around their military installations, oil sites, and populated areas.
