Germany and the United States have agreed to deliver five Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, in a renewed show of transatlantic military support amid escalating Russian missile attacks. The announcement was made by German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius during the 29th meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group on Monday.
The deal was struck last week in Washington between Pistorius and U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, aiming to bolster Ukraine’s ability to intercept ballistic missiles—especially as Russia intensifies long-range bombardments that only Patriot systems can counter.
Defensive Alliance Strengthens
Since April 2025, Germany and the United Kingdom have jointly led the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, taking over from the United States. The July 21 session also included Ukraine’s new Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal and his predecessor Rustem Umerov, who now heads Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council.
According to Germany’s Defence Ministry, the Patriot system deliveries are part of a larger initiative dubbed “Enduring Action on Air Defence,” following the previous year’s €1 billion “Immediate Action” campaign. Pistorius emphasized Germany’s leadership in coordinating international aid to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense amid persistent Russian drone and missile attacks.
Massive Ammunition and Drone Support
Germany also pledged to deliver 220,000 rounds of ammunition for Gepard anti-aircraft systems, which have proven effective against drone threats. The ammunition will be co-supplied with the UK. Pistorius also confirmed Germany will provide additional air defense systems and urgently needed munitions in the coming days.
In a strategic shift, Germany plans to directly invest in Ukraine’s defense manufacturing, including the production of cruise missiles, drones, and long-range rockets. This localization aims to target Russian capabilities “on the ground,” enabling Ukraine to defend its airspace more proactively.
Ukraine Responds with Gratitude
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal expressed thanks on X (formerly Twitter), calling Pistorius a “key ally” in strengthening Ukraine’s defense architecture. He added that the two leaders discussed financial and military support, expanded drone production, and Ukraine’s role in the EU’s SAFE initiative for continental security.
“Grateful that Germany continues to stand by Ukraine in our fight against Russian aggression,” Shmyhal wrote, signaling optimism about deeper European cooperation and technological investment.
The Patriot delivery represents a pivotal step in shifting Ukraine’s air defense strategy from reactive to deterrent, as the war enters a critical new phase.
