Nepal Police have recovered 616 bodies from eight districts until 7 a.m. local time on August 29 after the Bhote Koshi flood in Rasuwa. In addition, another 2,301 people have either been rescued or wounded, police said.
A total of 233 people died in Chitwan while 158 in Nawalparasi East district. According to police statistics, there were 48 deaths in Gorkha district, 47 deaths in Nawalparasi West, 45 deaths in Dhading, 41 deaths in Nuwakot, 31 deaths in Tanahun and 13 deaths in Rasuwa.
Out of the 2,301 people injured and rescued, 1,622 were reported from Nuwakot, 676 from Rasuwa and three from Dhading. There were reportedly 140 people in hospitals receiving treatment and getting discharged.
Police said a total of 4,811 policemen have been mobilized in the flood-hit districts, where 27 remain unreachable.
The floods reportedly destroyed 41 bridges, among them the Rasuwagadhi border bridge, and closed the main road to Dhading, local media reported. Bridges in Trishuli and Nuwakot were also washed away, according to reports.
According to U.S. Geological Survey, the floods were caused by the collapse of a glacier that caused a release of ice and rock debris.
In a fresh alert issued Friday, Aug. 28, police instructed security personnel and rescue and relief workers to remain on high alert and to move to safe ground if necessary.
