More than 50 people have died as of Wednesday in the sudden flood on Rasuwa’s Bhotekoshi River,Prime Minister Balen Shah said in a statement posted on Facebook.
Security forces have carried more than 250 people out by Nepali Army helicopter, according to the statement. Injured survivors were flown to Kathmandu, where 100 beds at Bir Hospital and the National Trauma Center have been set aside for free treatment.
Virginia Times could not independently verify the death or rescue totals, which rest on the prime minister’s statement alone.
The government’s first priorities are saving the injured, searching for the missing and protecting people in the flood zone, Shah said. Rescue work will run through the night. He gave no figure for the missing.
The government has mobilized thousands of personnel, with medical teams working inside the flood zone. The World Health Organization and Nepal Scout have sent doctors, rescuers and health supplies.
Bidur in Nuwakot; Uttargaya and Gosaikunda in Rasuwa; Gajuri, Galchhi, Benighat, Tripurasundari and Siddhalekh in Dhading; and Shahid Lakhan and Gandaki rural municipalities in Gorkha are among the worst hit, the statement said. Food, clean water, medicine and temporary shelter will be sent to affected families.
