KYIV, Ukraine — Russia launched 21 ballistic missiles at Kyiv in three waves overnight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, as attacks across Ukraine left at least two people dead and 34 injured.
Homes, energy facilities, shopping malls and businesses in the capital were among the many sites damaged, Zelenskyy wrote in a post on X. He also listed infrastructure at the metro and at one of the city’s railway stations, along with a monastery.
Emergency crews were working at every affected location, according to the post.
The strikes were not limited to the capital. Twelve Ukrainian regions came under Russian attack overnight, Zelenskyy said, and five children were among the injured in Kyiv and elsewhere. Two deaths had been confirmed at the time of his post.
His account of the damage and casualties could not be independently verified.
Zelenskyy, who referred to the attackers as Russian “humanitarians,” said the barrage came almost immediately after another round of talks. In his view, it showed Russia’s attitude toward the war had not really changed.
The search for a way to end the war should continue, he wrote. But when Russia answers negotiations with ballistic missiles, he argued, real pressure is needed to push it toward ending the killing.
He called for stronger air defenses, quick delivery of missiles, the ability to destroy ballistic missile launchers and sanctions over the war.
“Ukraine deserves support. People’s lives deserve protection,” Zelenskyy wrote, thanking those who stand with Ukraine.
