Kallas, Romania’s Top Diplomat Urge Quick Launch of Black Sea Hub

EU foreign policy chief also raised Solidarity Lanes for Ukrainian grain and NATO's regional posture

Romania’s new Foreign Minister Dan Neculaescu and European Union High Representative Kaja Kallas called for the Black Sea Maritime Security Hub to become operational quickly, following talks centered on security in the region.

Kallas cast the issue as urgent because of Russian pressure at sea. In a post on X, she said Russia is stepping up attacks on shipping in the Black Sea and described them as a danger to food security both in the region and around the world. Her post did not cite specific attacks.

Neculaescu, writing on X, called a swiftly operational hub “essential.” He described the meeting as a good exchange that included Black Sea security.

According to Kallas, the two also discussed NATO’s strengthened posture in the region. She said she raised the importance of the Solidarity Lanes in moving Ukrainian grain to global markets.

Both officials pointed to Ukraine and Moldova. Neculaescu wrote that the two countries remain strategic priorities, while Kallas said she looks forward to working with him to support them and make Europe stronger.

Neculaescu also linked the talks to the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council, writing that a council that delivers more means a stronger EU and a stronger Romania.

Neither post gave the date or location of the meeting.
