Somerset County Teacher Charged With Sexually Assaulting 16-Year-Old

Police say the Westover man, who teaches at East Salisbury Elementary School, is being held without bond

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – A 61-year-old Somerset County teacher who also works as a barber has been charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old at a Princess Anne barbershop earlier this month, Maryland State Police said Wednesday.

Maurice Cotton Sr., of Westover, was arrested at 1 p.m. Tuesday. He is charged with sexual abuse of a minor, second-degree assault and fourth-degree sexual offense, and is being held without bond at the Somerset County Detention Center.

Police said Cotton teaches at East Salisbury Elementary School and works as a barber in Princess Anne. He and the teen knew each other, according to police, who did not release further details about the victim, citing agency policy.

The investigation began Oct. 3, when police received a report of an unwanted sexual assault at the barbershop. Investigators with the agency’s Criminal Enforcement Division, Eastern Region, filed charges after consulting with the Somerset County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The police release did not include a comment from Cotton.

Anyone who believes they may have been victimized by Cotton, or who has information about the case, is asked to contact Sgt. Jonathan Pruitt at [email protected] or 443-260-3700. All calls will be kept confidential.
