Mexican authorities said Sunday that security forces killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), during a military operation in the state of Jalisco, according to a Defense Ministry statement.
In its February 22 press release, Mexico’s Secretariat of National Defense reported that special forces had targeted Tapalpa in Jalisco state in an effort to capture “Rubén ‘N’ (a) Mencho.” According to the report, Mexicano forces were fired upon and responded in kind, leaving four suspected CJNG gang members dead at the scene and three others seriously injured. Those three died en route from the scene of the operation by air transport to Mexico City.
The authority said that two other suspected CJNG gang members were arrested in the operation and that weapons and armored vehicles, including rocket launchers, were confiscated from the scene. Three Mexican service members were injured in the operation and transported to Mexico City for medical attention.
International media, including Reuters and AP, citing Mexican government sources, reported the deceased suspect was identified as Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” who had long headed the CJNG and had become one of the most sought-after suspects for both Mexico and the U.S.
The Mexican Defense Ministry said that its operation had been aided by intelligence from Mexico’s National Intelligence Center and Attorney General’s Office. Additional information had been provided by U.S. officials.
In the wake of the operation, additional Army and National Guard troops were deployed in the region to enhance security in Jalisco and other areas in the region where unrest had been reported.
