Mexico’s President Sheinbaum Files Harassment Complaint, Seeks Penalties in All 32 States

Mexico’s president files complaint and orders a review to align state laws on sexual harassment.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said she has filed a police complaint over a harassment incident in the capital and will move to ensure sexual harassment is punishable in all 32 Mexican states. “No one can violate our body and personal space,” she wrote, adding the episode reflects what many women face.

At her morning news conference, Sheinbaum said the suspect—who appeared intoxicated—also harassed other women before security intervened, as reported by López-Dóriga Digital. She said that sexual harassment is a crime in Mexico City but not everywhere else in the country. She also said that the federal government will look at the laws again with the goal of making them apply to everyone in the country.

Sheinbaum said she will not change how she interacts with the public following the incident. “We have to be close to the people,” she said, while confirming a complaint was filed with Mexico City prosecutors.

What’s next: The president said her administration will examine state criminal codes and press for harmonized treatment of sexual harassment as a criminal offense across Mexico. After the review, more legal action is expected.
