UN Reimposes Iran Sanctions Under ‘Snapback’; U.S. Backs E3 Move, Urges Direct Talks

E3-led action revives six UNSC resolutions; U.S. urges direct talks.

The United Nations reinstated a broad range of sanctions against Iran at 8:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday, September 27, concluding the “snapback” process triggered by France, Germany, and Britain on August 28, the U.S. State Department announced. The reinstated restrictions bring back six Security Council resolutions—1696, 1737, 1747, 1803, 1835, and 1929—because the statement said Iran had “significantly not fulfilled” its nuclear obligations.

Under the re-imposed sanctions, Iran is required to freeze activities related to enrichment-, heavy-water-, and reprocessing-associated work; is under a ban on using ballistic-missile technology; and is under a ban on the transfer of conventional weapons. The package also re-imposes travel bans and global asset freezes on listed individuals and entities and includes seizure of arms and other prohibited cargo shipped by or on behalf of Iran, the State Department explained.

The action followed Security Council deliberations this month. The Council’s September 19 decision—later reiterated on September 26—to restore the sanctions “sends a clear message” that the non-compliers will be held responsible, the U.S. statement claimed. In the meantime, the E3 said Iran’s actions gave them no alternative but to seek snapback, while adding that diplomacy remains an option, in the foreign ministers’ joint statement.

President Donald Trump is willing to negotiate a deal if the Iranian regime is ready to “direct talks, in good faith,” according to the U.S. statement. Without any movement toward a deal, Washington says partners should fully implement the UN measures to further pressure Iran’s leaders.
