Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sunday that the United States would begin an “economic D-Day” against Iran at dawn, calling it “the single greatest financial offensive ever marshaled against an adversary.”
In a post on X, Bessent wrote that the objective was to sever every economic lifeline sustaining Iran’s government “until Tehran stands alone.” He said President Trump had created the conditions to use every agency and authority and pursue actions many assumed the government would never take.
The treasury secretary also claimed Trump had dismantled Iran’s military capabilities, destroyed nearly 100% of its military factories and buried its nuclear program. The post offered no evidence supporting those assessments.
Bessent accused Iran’s government of presenting extortion as security guarantees and relying on the belief that Iranian retaliation was certain while U.S. enforcement was negotiable. Under Trump, Bessent wrote, that era was over.
He warned those concerned about defying Tehran not to discount the cost of testing Washington. The post did not identify the specific financial measures or authorities the administration planned to use.
