In June 2024, Herndon High School senior James Culatta faced a life-altering accident during a family hike in Orem, Utah. The ground beneath him gave way, plunging him into a scalding 200°F underground hot spring. He suffered third-degree burns over more than 50% of his body, requiring multiple surgeries and months of intensive care at the University of Utah Health’s Burn Center.

During his recovery, James faced immense physical and emotional challenges. He had to relearn basic movements, starting with standing and eventually walking. His determination was fueled by his passion for theater and dance.

“Dancing is my favorite thing in the world, so once I mastered walking, I wanted to be able to do more – even run,” James said.

Despite missing the first semester of his senior year, James returned to Herndon High with a goal: to audition for the spring musical, “Footloose.” He prepared diligently, and his efforts paid off when he was cast as the lead, Ren McCormick.

Theater director Scott Pafumi recalled James’s audition: “There’s always a great moment in auditions when the whole casting panel looks at each other and says – that’s it, there’s the lead of our show. We all felt that way with James.”

“It gives me hope going forward,” James said. “You can do anything if you believe in yourself.”

James performed in long black workout pants to conceal his scars and requested modifications to his character’s dialogue to align with his faith. His performance was met with standing ovations and served as a testament to his resilience and dedication.

After graduation, James plans to work as a counselor at a summer camp for burn survivors, aiming to inspire others with his story. He will then attend Utah Valley University, where he intends to continue his involvement in theater and pursue a career helping others overcome physical challenges.
