Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf mocked an Axios report about possible progress in U.S.-Iran negotiations, after the outlet reported that U.S. officials believed the two sides were close to a written understanding.
“Operation Trust Me Bro failed. Now back to routine with Operation Fauxios,” Ghalibaf wrote in a post on X.
Axios reported that U.S. officials believed Washington and Tehran were moving closer to a one-page memorandum of understanding to end the war and set a framework for further nuclear negotiations. The outlet also reported that no agreement had been reached.
Ghalibaf’s post appeared to take aim at both the report and Axios itself, referring to the outlet as “Fauxios.”
Iranian media reported that Ghalibaf described the Axios report as part of a U.S. psychological campaign after what he called a setback for Washington in the Strait of Hormuz.
On Wednesday, President Trump said that the Strait of Hormuz could be opened to all shipping, including Iran, if Tehran accepts what he described as terms already discussed in negotiations.
Writing a post on Truth Social, Trump said that outcome depends on Iran agreeing to the terms. He called that “perhaps, a big assumption.”
Trump also warned that if Iran does not agree, “the bombing starts,” and said it would be “at a much higher level and intensity than it was before.”
Trump’s statement came one day after he had paused “Project Freedom”, a U.S. operation he described as an effort to move ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
Announcing on Truth Social on Tuesday, Trump wrote the pause followed requests from Pakistan and other countries. The pause is intended to give negotiators time to determine whether the agreement can be finalized and signed, President Trump said. The blockade in Strait of Hormuz stays in place during the pause, he said.
The Strait of Hormuz has remained a key point in the conflict.
The wider conflict began with U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28.
