Russia struck Ukraine overnight with 90 missiles and 600 drones, causing fatalities and wounding at least 83 people, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday. Kyiv took the worst of the attack.
According to Zelenskyy, 36 of the 90 missiles were ballistic. Some were not intercepted, and Kyiv was Russia’s primary target, he said.
Strikes hit a water supply facility, a market, dozens of residential buildings and several schools, according to Zelenskyy. He also said Russia fired an “Oreshnik” at Bila Tserkva.
First responders and other necessary services worked through the night in affected areas. Zelenskyy offered condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed.
He called on the United States, Europe and other partners to deliver additional air defense systems, particularly anti-ballistic capabilities, and said the attack should not pass without consequences for Russia.
“It is important that Ukraine is not alone,” Zelenskyy said.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the overnight attack, saying Russia’s strikes showed “brutality and disregard for both human life and peace negotiations.” She said the European Union stands firmly with Ukraine and that further support is on the way to reinforce its air defense systems.
Earlier Saturday, Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s security service struck a chemical manufacturer in Russia’s Perm Krai region, halting production at a facility he said supplies components to Russia’s weapons production chain.
Zelenskyy said Russia’s Metafrax Chemicals supplies materials used in aircraft, drones, missile engines and explosives across dozens of Russian military production sites.
