Qatar on Sunday condemned what it called an Iranian drone attack on an Emirati tanker affiliated with ADNOC as the vessel transited the Strait of Hormuz, saying the ship was struck by two drones.
Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued the statement on May 4, calling the alleged attack a “flagrant violation” of international law, freedom of maritime navigation and U.N. Security Council Resolution 2817.
“Freedom of navigation through the strait is a principle that cannot be compromised,” the ministry said, warning that the continued closure of the passage threatens the vital interests of countries across the region.
Qatar renewed its opposition to using the Strait of Hormuz as a bargaining chip and called for the waterway to be reopened without conditions.
The ministry also called for an end to what it described as Iran’s unjustified attacks on the assets of “brotherly countries.” It said Qatar stands in full solidarity with the United Arab Emirates and supports all measures the UAE takes to preserve its assets.
