Search and rescue teams from the United States, Morocco and other partner nations were searching southern Morocco Saturday after two U.S. service members went missing near a military training area, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) said.
The service members were reported missing May 2 near the Cap Draa Training Area, outside the city of Tan Tan. The command did not disclose how the two disappeared. The incident is under investigation.
Ground, air and maritime assets are taking part in the search, and the operation was ongoing at the time of the statement.
“Our focus is on the service members involved and their families,” the command said.
According to U.S. Africa Command, African Lion is its largest annual joint exercise, hosted by Morocco, Ghana, Senegal and Tunisia. The command describes it as a joint all-domain, multi-component and multinational exercise designed to strengthen interoperability among participants and build readiness to respond to crises and contingencies in Africa and around the world.
The command said more information would be provided as it becomes available.
