Iran Offers New Hormuz Deal Through Pakistan, Delays Nuclear Talks

Tehran’s reported proposal focuses first on Hormuz and the U.S. blockade, with nuclear talks pushed to a later stage.

Iran has sent the United States a new proposal through Pakistani mediators aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the war, while leaving nuclear negotiations for a later phase, Axios reported.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi conveyed written messages to the United States through Pakistan during his recent regional trip, the semi-official Fars news agency reported on Sunday.

The proposal focuses first on Hormuz and the U.S. blockade on Iran. AP reported that Tehran wants the blockade lifted as part of any arrangement. Axios reported that President Donald Trump wants to keep the blockade in place as leverage during negotiations.

The nuclear issue would not be handled immediately under Iran’s reported framework. Axios reported that talks over Iran’s nuclear program would be postponed to a later stage, after any initial arrangement on Hormuz and the blockade.

Trump is expected to meet Monday with senior national security and foreign policy officials to discuss the proposal and possible next steps, Axios reported, citing U.S. officials.

Trump also canceled a planned trip by envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Pakistan. Reuters reported that the decision came after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi left Islamabad after speaking only with Pakistani officials.

The White House has not publicly accepted Iran’s framework.
