U.S. forces have started a mission tied to mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz, with two Navy guided-missile destroyers involved on April 11, according to U.S. Central Command.
CENTCOM said the USS Frank E. Peterson and USS Michael Murphy moved through the Strait of Hormuz and operated in the Arabian Gulf as part of an effort to make the waterway safe for shipping. The command said the mission is aimed at clearing sea mines it says were previously placed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.
“Today, we began the process of establishing a new passage and we will share this safe pathway with the maritime industry soon to encourage the free flow of commerce,” Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of CENTCOM, said in the statement.
CENTCOM said the Strait of Hormuz is a key international shipping route with major importance for global trade.
The command also said more U.S. assets, including underwater drones, will join the effort in the coming days.
