Russian-Flagged Tanker Passes Through Strait of Hormuz During Conflict

The rare passage drew attention as shipping remained slow through the strategic waterway during the US-Israel-Iran conflict.

A Russian-flagged supertanker crossed the Strait of Hormuz into the Persian Gulf late Thursday, an unusual move as shipping through the strategic waterway remains limited during the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran.

According to Anadolu Agency, the vessel Arhimeda sailed west through the strait while empty. MarineTraffic data cited in the report identified the ship as a very large crude carrier built in 2000.

The report said the tanker had earlier listed Iran’s Kharg Island as its destination. It later changed its status to “for orders,” a shipping term used when a vessel has not yet been given its next port instructions.

Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has slowed sharply during the fighting, even as Iranian crude exports have continued, according to the report.

Kharg Island, Iran’s main crude export hub, was hit in US and Israeli strikes, Anadolu reported. Israel said its strikes were aimed at military sites, not energy infrastructure.
