Trump Pauses Planned Iran Strikes for Two Weeks

Trump announced a two-week pause in planned Iran strikes, saying the move could help finalize a broader agreement with Iran.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he has agreed to suspend planned U.S. military action against Iran for two weeks. He said the pause is conditioned on Iran agreeing to the “COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING” of the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump said the decision came after talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, who he said asked him to stop the attack planned for Tuesday night. He also said the United States had “already met and exceeded all Military objectives.”

He also said the United States had “already met and exceeded all Military objectives” and had received a “10 point proposal” from Iran that he called “a workable basis on which to negotiate.” He wrote that “almost all” past points of disagreement between the United States and Iran had been resolved, but said the two-week window would give both sides time to finish a broader agreement.

The announcement was a sharp shift from Trump’s warning earlier Tuesday that “a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again” if no deal was reached.
