IAEA says strikes landed near Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plant, warns of accident risk

The U.N. nuclear watchdog said one strike landed about 75 meters from the Bushehr plant perimeter and renewed its warning over nuclear safety.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said recent military strikes landed near Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, including one impact point about 75 meters from the site perimeter, but the plant itself was not damaged.

The U.N. nuclear watchdog said its finding was based on an independent analysis of new satellite imagery from April 5 and its detailed knowledge of the site. The latest review confirmed impacts close to the facility while showing no damage to the operating plant itself, the agency said.

“continued military activity near the BNPP – an operating plant with large amounts of nuclear fuel – could cause a severe radiological accident with harmful consequences for people and the environment in Iran and beyond,”Rafael Grossi, IAEA Director General, warned. He said the danger is serious because the site is an operating nuclear power plant with large amounts of nuclear fuel.

Grossi said attacks near the plant pose a real threat to nuclear safety and security, regardless of the intended target. He repeated his call for all sides to respect what the agency describes as the seven indispensable pillars for nuclear safety and security during conflict.

The IAEA said nuclear facilities and the surrounding areas should never be struck.
