US Expands Military Presence in Middle East, Reaches 50,000 as Iran Tensions Rise

As tensions with Iran rise, the U.S. has sent more troops to the Middle East. The U.S. now has about 50,000 troops in the area, and more are being sent in or prepared, according to Associated Press reports.

The buildup includes troops from the 82nd Airborne Division, one of the Army’s quick-response units. AP reported that at least 1,000 soldiers from the division were being prepared for deployment, though other reports have suggested the number may be higher.

The increase also includes Marine forces. According to AP, the region has already received about 5,000 Marines and sailors on Navy ships. This is in addition to the larger U.S. presence as the conflict enters its second month.

The most recent troop movements come as Washington considers its next step while still leaving room for diplomacy. Another AP report said the Trump administration sent Iran a 15-point ceasefire proposal through Pakistani intermediaries, even as troops were still being sent to the area.

But officials in Iran said direct talks were not happening, showing little progress in diplomatic efforts despite the ceasefire proposal and the continuing military buildup.

For now, the U.S. is sending more troops to the area, but it is keeping its options open. Even though officials are still talking about a possible diplomatic solution, the new deployments show that Washington is strengthening its position as the crisis worsens.
