The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad on March 15 urged U.S. citizens to leave Iraq immediately, warning that Iran-aligned terrorist militias have carried out indiscriminate attacks on Americans and U.S.-associated targets across the country, including in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.
The embassy said the International Zone in Baghdad has been attacked multiple times and remains closed to the public except in limited circumstances. It also warned of repeated attacks near Erbil International Airport and the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil and said Americans should not attempt to travel to either location because of the security threat.
The embassy advised Americans not to attempt travel to these locations. Americans have been advised not to travel to Iraq under any circumstances. Those who are already in Iraq have been advised to depart immediately.
They pointed out that Iraq is under a Level 4: Do Not Travel alert issued by the U.S. Department of State. They mentioned that terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, civil unrest, and the U.S. government’s inability to provide assistance to Americans in Iraq are all reasons to avoid travel to Iraq.
The embassy said Iraq’s airspace is closed and that commercial flights are not operating out of the country. It urged Americans to leave through overland routes to Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye.
It said Iraq’s land borders are generally open and that local ground transportation remains available, though travelers should expect long delays. The embassy also warned that airspace in neighboring countries may be closed and said Americans must comply with local entry and exit requirements.
