U.S. forces conducted 10 strikes against more than 30 ISIS targets in Syria from Feb. 3 to Feb. 12, as part of the larger effort to continue to maintain the pressure on the terrorist organization’s remaining networks, the military announced Friday. According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes targeted ISIS’s infrastructure and weapons storage facilities using precision munitions from fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aircraft.
This latest round of strikes against the terrorist organization follows five previous strikes that took place from January 27 to February 2 against an ISIS communications site, an important logistics hub, and weapons storage facilities. The strikes are all part of “Operation Hawkeye Strike,” which was initiated in response to an attack on December 13 near the city of Palmyra that killed two U.S. service members and an American interpreter.
CENTCOM explained that the two-month string of targeted strikes has resulted in the killing or capturing of over 50 ISIS terrorists, in addition to over 100 ISIS infrastructure targets being struck with hundreds of precision munitions. CENTCOM did not reveal the exact location of the latest strikes, nor did they reveal the extent of the damages. However, the military explained the purpose of the mission as part of a mission to disrupt the ability of the terrorist group to regroup, transport weapons, and plan attacks.
The military has previously explained that the ISIS terrorist group, even though it has lost some of the ground it previously controlled, still has the ability to conduct operations through the various cells and groups that are spread across Syria and Iraq. CENTCOM explained the purpose of the strikes in relation to the ISIS terrorist group’s remnants.
Although CENTCOM did not reveal the names of the alleged terrorists, the strikes are part of a continuous mission to target suspected ISIS fighters and facilitators, who the U.S. military claims are the individuals responsible for storing weapons, communicating, and keeping the attack plans alive.
