Eight Arab, Muslim States Condemn Israel’s Gaza Ceasefire Breaches, Warn Peace Plan at Risk

Ministers cited rising casualties and urged restraint as talks seek to move the process into a second phase.

Foreign ministers from Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia issued a joint statement on Sunday, condemning what they said were repeated breaches of the Gaza ceasefire agreement by Israel, which they said had resulted in the deaths and injuries of over 1,000 Palestinians.

In a statement issued on Sunday, which was published by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the foreign ministers said the reported breaches of the ceasefire posed a threat of escalating tensions, which might negatively impact the efforts being made by regional and international actors to move the peace process into its second phase, as desired by President Donald Trump.

They stressed that everyone involved needed to completely support the ceasefire, especially at this “critical” moment. They also encouraged everyone to be patient and said that any action on their part would hinder the process.

The foreign ministers also cited United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803, which stated that the breaches of the ceasefire posed a threat to the political process, which had negatively impacted the efforts being made to move the Gaza Strip into a period of improved security and humanitarian conditions.

They said that the truce had to be maintained for conditions for early recovery and reconstruction, which would pave the way for a just and lasting peace.

The ministers said any lasting settlement must be grounded in the Palestinian right to self-determination and statehood, consistent with international law, relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions, and the Arab Peace Initiative.
