Zelenskyy Warns Russia Is Preparing New Strikes on Ukraine’s Energy Grid

Ukraine’s leader says winter energy attacks are eroding faith in diplomacy as a delegation heads to the U.S.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said there was intelligence that Russia was planning further strikes on the energy infrastructure of the country, including nuclear power plant-related facilities, as the Ukrainian government tries to persuade its allies of the implications of attacking during the winter months.

In the post on X , President Zelenskyy explained: “The report was given to me by the head of the Defense Intelligence, Oleh Ivashchenko. The report is on the so-called designated tasks of the Russian army. There is nothing to indicate the willingness of the Russian side to fulfill any agreements or stop the war. All the information indicates preparations for new attacks.”

Each strike on the energy sector, during a difficult winter, undermines efforts by important countries, “particularly the United States,” to bring an end to the war, President Zelenskyy said. Ukraine “is acting as constructive as possible in diplomatic efforts, and Russia’s goal is strikes and tormenting people,” President Zelenskyy said, referring to Ukraine’s efforts in diplomatic circles, compared with Russia’s efforts in Ukraine’s energy sector.

Zelenskyy also stated that the Ukrainian delegation is already in the United States, and one of the tasks for them is “to convey the full and accurate picture of the damage being wrought by the Russian strikes.” He explained that one of the effects of what he called “terror attacks” is the delegitimation of diplomacy because “people begin to distrust negotiations” as the strikes target what he called “limited opportunities for negotiations.”

The warning comes as Ukraine continues to pursue diplomatic efforts while simultaneously attempting to safeguard and restore its infrastructure that has been repeatedly attacked since the beginning of Russia’s invasion.

There must be some progress on the documents which have been prepared,” he said. “Ukraine has never been and will never be a roadblock to peace,” President Zelensky said it is up to the partners whether there is any future in diplomacy.
