Russia attacked Ukraine’s energy infrastructure last night with drones and missiles, President Zelensky said on Wednesday while air alarms were going off across a few regions.
Writing on X, the president said that Russia also delivered 113 attacker drones, “about 70 of them of the Shahed type,” as well as three ballistic missiles. The attacks occurred on areas of the Dnipro, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Kherson regions, while air raid alerts extended to Kyiv and its vicinity as well as Chernihiv.
Zelenskyy thanked the units that intercepted the attacks, as well as the teams that have been working to fix the damage, to emphasize the fact that the warhead targets infrastructure that supplies heat energy. He argued that more air defense missiles must be provided to increase the interception percentage, reducing the effect of the aerial campaign conducted by Russia.
This comes as the allies of Kyiv are following the ceasefire line that is linked to guarantees for security. In a statement following the Jan. 6 meeting in Paris by “Coalition of the Willing,” partners would participate in the ceasefire monitoring and verification initiative led by the U.S. This was in line with the Council of the EU. According to Reuters, the burden to prove commitment to achieving peace now lies on Moscow following the agreement on a peace plan and guarantees by Kyiv and its allies.
Ukraine has been targeted by Russia’s attacks on its power infrastructure and other infrastructure, especially during the winter months during this ongoing war. Ukraine has asked its partners for more air defense and stockpiles of interceptors with which it can defend against Moscow’s increased long-range drone and missile strikes.
