Russian Missile and Drone Barrage Slams Kyiv, Killing One and Injuring Dozens

Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv pounds homes and energy sites as winter nears and Western allies tighten sanctions on Moscow.

Russian missiles and drones pounded Kyiv in a “massive” pre-dawn attack Friday, hitting almost every district of the Ukrainian capital, killing an elderly woman and injuring at least 24 people, according to AFP. Police said the wounded included a pregnant woman and a 10-year-old boy as bombs destroyed windows and caused fires around the city.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said air defense units were engaged as around 30 residential buildings in nine districts were damaged. Ukrainian emergency services rescued more than 40 people from burning or collapsed structures, AFP reported. Sections of the heating network were hit, leaving some homes in the northeastern Desnyansky district temporarily without heat, and authorities warned of possible disruptions to electricity and water supplies.

City officials said transport was partially blocked, with buses and trams delayed as debris was cleared. Residents reported seeing tracer rounds fired at drones and several anti-missile systems deployed over the capital.

The latest barrage comes as Russia intensifies strikes on Ukraine’s energy system, rail infrastructure and residential areas ahead of winter, while its forces continue grinding advances in the eastern Donetsk and Lugansk regions. Moscow has claimed additional village gains along the front and said it downed more than 200 Ukrainian drones overnight on its territory, including over Krasnodar Krai and Saratov, AFP reported.

Ukraine has increased its own long-range attacks on Russian infrastructure, with a fire at the Sheskharis oil facility in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk and damage to a civilian vessel leaving three crew members wounded, AFP reported.

The assault on Kyiv comes as Canada announces new sanctions on Russia’s drone and energy sectors and G7 foreign ministers press for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine while backing long-term financial and military support for Kyiv, AFP reported.
