Newly Opened Hongqi Bridge Partially Collapses in Sichuan; No Injuries Reported

Officials closed the 758-meter span a day earlier after slope cracks; landslides then caused a partial collapse with no casualties.

A section of the 758-meter Hongqi Bridge in Maerkang, Sichuan, collapsed on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2025, after landslides struck a mountainside beside the span. Authorities had closed the bridge a day earlier when they observed cracks on nearby slopes and damage to approach roads, according to Reuters.

Police stopped traffic on Monday as the shifts in the terrain around the site worsened. On Tuesday, conditions worsened further, triggering slides that undermined the approach bridge and roadbed. The structure partially collapsed, with no reported casualties, according to Reuters.

Video on social media showed a section of the span falling into a river amid dust and debris as the hillside gave way. The Hongqi Bridge sits on a national highway that links central China with Tibet and had only just opened, Reuters reports. Authorities said an investigation is underway into the stability of the surrounding slopes.

This occurrence happened months after two other bridge failures brought attention to the concerns of construction and geology in some places of China. In August, at least 12 workers were killed when a railway bridge under construction collapsed in Qinghai province, according to the Associated Press.
