Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu was closed indefinitely on Saturday after a problem with runway side lights halted operations at about 5:30 p.m. local time.
Airport spokesperson Rinji Sherpa said both domestic and international flights are affected and repair crews are working to restore the airfield lighting system. At night, the runway is lit by an “airfield lighting” system used for takeoffs and landings. Officials said repair crews are working to fix the malfunction and expect regular flights to resume soon.
Incoming aircraft were placed in holding patterns over the capital as officials assessed the outage. Departures and arrivals will remain suspended until further notice, the spokesperson said.
