Ukraine says it hit a big Russian gas processing plant and an oil pumping station in Russia’s Volgograd Oblast. This makes the war for energy infrastructure worse this winter.
The Korobkovsky Gas Processing Plant in Kotovo and the Yefimovka oil transport facility both had explosions and flames. The General Staff of Ukraine is still looking into how bad the damage is.
According to a statement from the Volgograd governor that was reported by TASS, regional officials in Russia confirmed “fires at fuel and energy facilities” after drones flew over the area overnight.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the strikes were answers to Russian attacks and that there were “positive developments.” He also said that centers like Ust-Luga and Primorsk are now “within reach.” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that in another post, he said that Moscow is afraid of a cease-fire and advocated for further pressure through sanctions and long-range capabilities.
The damage to energy systems is hurting both sides. Bloomberg says that recent Russian attacks have destroyed roughly 60% of Ukraine’s domestic natural gas production. This could mean that Kyiv has to buy about €1.9 billion ($2.2 billion) worth of fuel for the winter.
There is still not much independent proof of the full impact at Korobkovsky and Yefimovka. The Kyiv Independent said that satellite fire-detection data and local reports showed that there were fires at both sites while evaluations were still going on.
