Nvidia, OpenAI strike landmark compute pact to build 10GW of data centers

Nvidia plans up to $100B as OpenAI targets “millions of GPUs,” first 1GW on Vera Rubin in 2H 2026.

Nvidia and OpenAI announced in a joint statement that they want to work together on a strategic agreement that would put at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia equipment into new, large-scale computing centers. Nvidia says it plans to put up to $100 billion into OpenAI, with the money coming in when each gigawatt goes live.

The rollout is meant to give OpenAI’s next generation of models and services “millions of GPUs.” The firms indicated that the project will increase the amount of training and runtime available at many sites that are specifically designed for high-density computing.

Jensen Huang, the founder and CEO of Nvidia, dubbed the initiative “the next leap forward” and said that the buildout will make the next era of enhanced capabilities possible. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, claimed that access to computing power will be the foundation of the economy of the future and that the additional capacity will assist breakthroughs on a large scale. On Monday, both leaders made statements on behalf of their companies.

“There’s no partner but NVIDIA that can do this at this kind of scale, at this kind of speed,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.

The first phase, which will use Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform to set up 1GW of power, is planned for the second half of 2026. More phases will follow as sites are prepared.

According to the proposal, OpenAI will see Nvidia as a top strategic partner for computing and networking. The two companies will also work together to improve their hardware and software roadmaps. The parties indicated they aim to reach an agreement in the next several weeks.

The firms said that the agreement will work well with OpenAI’s current partnerships with Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank, and the Stargate consortium, which are all working on constructing next-generation infrastructure. Analysts think that regulators might pay close attention to a deal of this size because Nvidia is such a big player in the market for high-end graphics chips. Any final deal would probably be looked at in light of worries about competition in the industry.

OpenAI said that more than 700 million people use its services every week. It also noted that it needs more capacity to keep up with demand while it builds its next set of goods.
