Kamala Harris on Thursday accused the administration of “an outright abuse of power,” saying officials are “attacking critics and using fear as a weapon” while major media companies “are capitulating to these threats.” She made the remarks in a post on X and echoed them on other platforms.
“We cannot dare to be silent or complacent in the face of this frontal assault on free speech. Harris wrote, “We, the People, deserve better.”
Her statement came after a lot of talk about network decisions that affected late-night shows, such ABC’s decision to stop airing “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” which upset free-speech advocates and many in the industry. Entertainment trade publications said that station groups blamed political pressure for the decision, however proponents of the decision disagree with this.
Harris said that the time was a test for journalism and entertainment companies, saying that giving in to political pressure hurts public conversation. She didn’t say what steps she thinks the government should take back, but she told news organizations to stand up to threats and keep airing critical voices.
The comments from the former vice president give a well-known voice to a topic that is moving quickly and has to do with politics, the media, and free speech rights. By the time it was published, her post had been shared a lot on X, Threads, and Instagram, which shows that she was trying to get others to support her outside of usual news sources.
