- Relai adopts Keyless biometrics to meet MFA requirements without compromising user privacy.
- The Bitcoin-only wallet app reports over 500,000 downloads and $1 billion in trading volume.
- Keyless’ “Zero-Knowledge Biometrics” ensure biometric data is stored unreadably in the cloud.
- Step-up authentication includes login, recovery, account deletion, and large transactions.
- Keyless also partners with IDnow to promote “continuous trust” in identity verification.
Swiss-regulated crypto wallet provider Relai has implemented advanced biometric authentication from Keyless to comply with multi-factor authentication (MFA) regulations and reinforce user trust, according to a report by BiometricUpdate.com.
The privacy-focused integration covers not only logins and account recovery but also sensitive actions like account deletion and high-volume Bitcoin purchases. The move is part of Relai’s expansion strategy across Europe, which necessitates stricter identity and security protocols under new licensing frameworks.
Private by Design
Keyless uses a proprietary system called Zero-Knowledge Biometrics, which allows biometric data to be transformed on a user’s device and stored in an unreadable format in the cloud. The process ensures that the company never has access to users’ raw biometric information — a critical safeguard for privacy-conscious crypto users.
Relai CTO and Co-founder Adem Bilican emphasized that the partnership with Keyless offers a form of authentication that is not only secure and fast but also aligned with the privacy expectations of the crypto community. “We chose Keyless because it delivers true multi-factor authentication — independent, secure, and quick,” said Bilican.
Replacing the 12-Word Seed Phrase?
Bilican also stated in a promotional video that he believes biometrics could eventually replace the longstanding 12-word seed phrase — a foundational but often vulnerable element in the crypto space. With Keyless’ model, authentication must occur on the device a user originally enrolled on, offering both possession and inherence factors without compromising convenience or privacy.
The step-up biometric verification will be triggered during critical user actions, such as executing large-volume transactions or recovering lost access. This provides an extra layer of trust while minimizing the risk of account takeovers.
Toward Continuous Trust
Beyond Relai, Keyless is also teaming up with identity verification platform IDnow to embed its privacy-preserving biometrics into a broader identity framework that promotes “continuous trust.”
The integration marks a significant step in aligning regulatory compliance with the decentralized values of the crypto sector — proving that enhanced security and privacy are not mutually exclusive.
