The European Union (EU) on Thursday issued a strong statement condemning the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, calling for justice for the victims and urging both India and Pakistan to avoid further escalation.
According to the official statement by the EU High Representative, the EU and its 27 Member States “unequivocally condemn the heinous terrorist attack… and the murder of innocent civilians.” The bloc reaffirmed that “terrorism can never be justified” and emphasized that those responsible for the violence must be brought to justice.
The attack, which has inflamed already fragile relations between India and Pakistan, prompted the EU to express “great concern” over the growing regional tensions. The statement warned of “the possible loss of more lives” and emphasized the importance of restraint.
“The EU calls on both parties to exercise restraint, to de-escalate tensions and desist from further attacks to safeguard civilian lives on both sides,” the EU said. “It is vital that India and Pakistan also live up to their obligations under international law and take all measures possible to protect civilian lives.”
In its statement, the EU reiterated its commitment to regional peace and stability, noting it “will work with all parties to de-escalate the situation.” While acknowledging each nation’s right to defend its citizens, the EU stressed that lawful measures must be pursued and dialogue prioritized.
The call for de-escalation comes amid rising diplomatic and military tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, with India recently launching what it termed “Operation Sindoor” in response to cross-border militant activities. The situation has sparked international concern about potential fallout in South Asia.
As the crisis unfolds, the EU’s statement reflects growing global pressure for both India and Pakistan to pursue diplomatic channels and avoid triggering a wider conflict in the already volatile region.
