US Strikes Iran After Drone Attack on Ship in Strait of Hormuz

Central Command says the strike answers an Iranian drone attack that damaged a cargo ship and breached last week’s truce.

The U.S. military struck Iranian missile and drone storage sites and coastal radar positions Friday in response to a drone attack on a commercial ship in the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. Central Command said.

U.S. aircraft carried out the strikes June 26, the command said in a statement. The action followed a June 25 attack in which Iran hit the M/V Ever Lovely with a one-way attack drone, according to Central Command.

The Singapore-flagged cargo ship was exiting the strait along the Omani coast when it was struck, the command said.

Iran’s attack on commercial shipping violated the ceasefire and undermined freedom of navigation through the waterway. — U.S. Central Command

Central Command said Iran’s attack on commercial shipping violated the ceasefire and undermined freedom of navigation through the waterway. President Donald Trump also called the attack a violation of the ceasefire agreement.

Central Command said its forces continue to coordinate safe passage for commercial vessels transiting the strait. The U.S. military remains present to ensure the agreement with Iran is upheld, the command said.

Central Command did not say how extensive the strikes were or whether they caused casualties.

This is a developing story. Virginia Times will update as information becomes available.
