Two Die, 12 Injured After Boat Capsizes Near Liberty Island

NYPD divers found a woman and infant after 12 others were rescued from New York Harbor.

A 27-year-old woman and a 5-month-old girl died and 12 others suffered minor injuries after a boat capsized near Liberty Island on Saturday night, officials said.

The New York Police Department⁠ said a 911 caller reported the capsizing at about 10:25 p.m. Police sent Harbor, Scuba and Aviation units to the scene.

Twelve people had been rescued before police arrived. NYPD divers later located the woman and baby in the water.

Emergency crews transported both victims in critical condition to NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, where doctors pronounced them dead.

According to the New York City Fire Department⁠, the 12 other individuals received minor injuries and were hospitalized.

Police were investigating the cause of the capsizing. Authorities did not identify the victims and could not confirm if they are relatives or not.
