President Donald Trump said Monday he instructed U.S. representatives to demand compensation from Iran in future negotiations after Tehran sought payment for damage from more than five months of U.S.-Israeli attacks.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said Iran should compensate families of people he alleged were killed or gravely wounded by roadside bombs, regional conflicts and crackdowns on protesters.
Trump also said Iran should answer for deaths and damage in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Gaza. He offered no details on how compensation would be calculated or pursued.
Trump called for payments to families of sailors killed in the 2000 USS Cole bombing. But the FBI says al Qaeda planned and carried out the attack, killing 17 sailors.
Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr, who led Iran’s Supreme National Security Council when he spoke Saturday, said the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until the United States changed its conduct. Iran’s six conditions included compensation for war damage, sanctions relief and the release of frozen assets, Time reported.
Trump also claimed that 52,000 people had been killed in the past five months.
