President Donald Trump said Tuesday he is appointing William J. Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and chairman of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, to serve as acting director of national intelligence.
Trump announced the appointment in a Truth Social post, saying Pulte will remain in his current roles while serving as acting DNI.
The announcement follows the resignation of Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who said she will step down effective June 30, 2026. In a resignation letter posted by Tulsi Gabbard, she said her husband, Abraham, has been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer.
“At this time, I must step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle,” Gabbard wrote.
Trump cited Pulte’s work overseeing the Federal Housing Finance Agency and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. He said Pulte has experience managing “the safety and soundness of the Markets” and more than $10 trillion at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Gabbard said she remains committed to ensuring a smooth transition before leaving the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
“I cannot in good conscience ask him to face this fight alone while I continue in this demanding and time-consuming position,” she wrote.
Trump did not say how long Pulte is expected to serve in the acting role.
