MINNEAPOLIS – Former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin has been convicted of murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd.
The jury has found former officer Chauvin guilty of murder over the death of African-American George Floyd on a Minneapolis street last year.
A final verdict has been reached in the murder trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, according to a notice posted on Hennepin County Court’s website.
Chauvin faces charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the 2020 killing of George Floyd.
The jury had been deliberating since Monday afternoon, following closing arguments.
Floyd died last May after Chauvin, a white officer, pinned his knee on or close to Floyd’s neck for about 9 1/2 minutes.
Floyd’s death on Memorial Day 2020 sparked protests in Minneapolis, across the United States, and around the world. It prompted calls for police reform and soul-searching on issues of racial injustice.
Floyd was a 46-year-old Black man from Houston who had moved to Minnesota just three years earlier.
Derek Chauvin is handcuffed after being found guilty on all three counts, including second-degree murder.
