Russian Strikes Cut Power to Over 500,000 in Ukraine

Energy facilities in six regions were hit overnight as Moscow and Kyiv signalled U.S.-brokered talks could resume in November

KYIV, Ukraine — Russia attacked energy facilities in six Ukrainian regions overnight, knocking out power for more than 500,000 people, Deputy Energy Minister Artem Nekrasov said Friday, according to Reuters.

The strikes hit the Zhytomyr, Volyn, Mykolaiv, Poltava, Khmelnytskyi and Rivne regions, Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said Friday.

Crews have begun emergency restoration work where the security situation allows, the ministry said.

DTEK, one of Ukraine’s largest private energy companies, said a thermal power plant stopped generating electricity after Russian shelling. The company did not identify the plant.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its air defenses intercepted and destroyed 443 Ukrainian drones overnight. The claim could not be independently verified.

The overnight exchange came less than a day after Moscow and Kyiv signalled that U.S.-brokered peace talks could move forward.

U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff met Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg on Wednesday. Putin said Moscow was ready to resume U.S.-mediated talks with Kyiv in November, according to CNBC.
